Elon Musk & Tesla has completely outpaced established industry heavy hitters like Volkswagen, Toyota, and Ford despite selling fewer cars than them. Tesla has defeated them all to become the most valuable car company in the world. This was achieved through a wide variety of means and ways in which the company sought to achieve complete control of all their components in production down to sales. These innovations’ inefficiency and a unique business model that started with expensive cars first allowed them to grow immensely fast in a short span of time. Volkswagen and Toyota meanwhile, fell behind despite building viable electrified cars. Volkswagen was swayed by their still growing diesel sales and an emissions scandal while Toyota was dissuaded from fully committing to EVs by the failure of other Japanese car companies’ EV efforts. However, they are starting to rebound and look poised to challenge Tesla for the crown. With huge investments in EV development and a fleet of concept cars already revealed, the battle will be heated.
